Does it cost to seek legal advice from the SLS?
No. The service is free.
Who does the Student Legal Service help?
We provide free, confidential legal advice to all UTAS students. Appointments can be face to face in Hobart or via zoom or phone. Students at the Launceston, Cradle Coast and Rozelle campuses can book a phone or zoom appointment. Eventually, we hope to be able to visit the Launceston, Cradle Coast and Rozelle campuses to provide face to face appointments – stay tuned for more info about this!
Which legal issues can you help me with?
Until recently, the Student Legal Service provided information sessions and appointments to help international students with their visa questions. We can still help with visa issues, but we can also provide initial advice about most legal problems! For example:
Who will I be meeting with for my appointment?
Our lawyer, Sarah Loewy, provides advice in appointments.
Sarah was admitted to legal practice in 2018. Since then, she has worked in commercial litigation and as a civil lawyer for an Aboriginal legal service. She started with the Student Legal Service in October 2023.
Occasionally, Sarah will be assisted in appointments by students from the Law School who are doing the Work Integrated Learning unit. If you are not comfortable with students sitting in on your appointment, you are more than welcome to let us know. The students are required to sign a confidentiality agreement so that your personal information is protected.
Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?
Please bring along any relevant documents that can assist the SLS with your matter. Please also bring along some form of identification (if you are a current student of UTAS, your student ID will be sufficient).
Will my legal issue be used or discussed outside of the appointment?
No. The SLS was created to be a free, readily available and confidential service for UTAS Students. Your personal details and the details of your matter will be kept confidential.
What if you can't help me?
Sometimes, a student’s legal problem may be more complicated or require more ongoing casework than we have the resources to help you with. Your problem may not be strictly a legal issue, or there might be another service better placed to help you. If we can’t help you with your problem, we will refer you to other legal or support services who can help you. Alternatively, see the Other Resources section on our website.
Will other students have access to my information?
A student committee assists in the running of the service. As a result, some committee members will have access to information that you provide to the service. Occasionally, students from the Law School’s Work Integrated Learning unit may be sitting in on appointments for training purposes. You are more than welcome to let us know if you are not comfortable with students being present at your appointment. All students doing the unit are required to sign a confidentiality agreement so that your personal information is
protected. All matters discussed in appointments are strictly confidential. If you have any concerns, you
can contact our lawyer directly.
Can the SLS represent me in court?
In some cases, our lawyer may be able to represent you in court. She will discuss this option
with you if it is relevant in your situation.
No. The service is free.
